COVID-19: Gilbert Parks and Recreation Resident Survey

Parks and Recreation facilities, programs, special events, rentals and tournaments have all been impacted in Gilbert during this unprecedented time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From April 30th – May 4th, we shared a survey on our social media channels (Nextdoor, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), and e-notification list to quickly gauge how residents feel about future Parks and Recreation services. This shorter feedback period enabled us to quickly respond during this evolving situation.

We received 2,282 responses in just five days. Let’s look at what Gilbert residents had to say.

Concerns, Safety Measures and Future Outlook

Gilbert residents displayed varying levels of concern regarding Parks and Recreation services moving forward this year. The top three safety measures residents expect are clearly posted cleaning/sanitizing schedule of facilities, limited class sizes and limited facility occupancy. Residents would most likely want to return to facilities and programs, special events and “whichever allows for social distancing.”

Program Types and Sizes

62.4% of residents prefer in-person programming for the rest of the year. The top three programs residents are interested in attending this year are aquatics, health and fitness, and sports. Residents prefer to see “as many as the event venue can accommodate while still allowing for social distancing” and medium-sized groups of 5-10 people in future programming.

Virtual Programming

44.9% of residents do not prefer virtual activities. 21.2% prefer speakers and 20.7% prefer educational activities.

Special Event Types and Sizes

The top three special events residents are interested in attending this year are drive-in movies, movies in the park and parades. Residents prefer to see “as many as the event venue can accommodate while still allowing for social distancing” and small groups of less than 50 at future special events.

39.3% of residents are “currently not interested in attending a tournament with COVID-19 unknowns.” 32.8% would be interested in baseball/softball tournaments and 27.4% would be interested in soccer.

Of the 32% of residents interested in renting a facility this year, ramadas are the most desired facility. Birthday parties and family gatherings were the top reasons to rent a Gilbert facility within the next year.

Preferred Communication Method

73.9% of residents prefer to receive Parks and Recreation updates by email and 47.5% prefer social media updates.

Thank you to all of our community members who participated in the survey! Our team is using your feedback to drive decision-making for the future of Park and Recreation’s programs, special events, facilities, rentals and tournaments as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
